16 There are six things the Lord hates--
no, seven things he detests:
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that kill the innocent,
18 a heart that plots evil,
feet that race to do wrong,
19 a false witness who pours out lies,
a person who sows discord in a family.
The first five things God hates are described as objects: eyes, tongue, hands, heart, feet.
The last two: a false witness and a person who sows discord (called Strife in the NASB) are described as a people.
Of course, all of these things are done by people, but somehow the first five God can see it separately from the person. The last two -- someone who is a false witness who lies and someone who causes arguments and dissension in a family (especially God's family) seem to be particularly hateful to God. Witnesses are called to give proof to something that happened. If someone chooses to be a false witness she is making the whole justice system or wherever the witness is needed, a totally useless system. A false witness causes others to draw false conclusions, make decisions that are based on lies and often those who make decisions based on lies don't even know it.
As a mom I can say it is wonderful when my kids get along. I love to see them enjoying each other, having fun, being at peace, just loving life. When they fight, I hate it.
I believe God feels this same way about his family. When Believers get along, have true fellowship it gives God joy. When we turn on each other it has to be awful for God. So, someone who does this wrecks God's whole family, at least for a while.
Sadly, false witnesses and people who sow discord are the two God-hate-things that can be easily found in the church. All of them can be found in the church but these two are sometimes even embraced by others in the name of religion.
