What you look at it is what you're focused on.
My son Pete gets easily distracted. If the TV is on, no matter what show is on (could even be just fuzz), his eyes go right to it -- even if he is walking in another direction!
This doesn't work well for him because when his eyes aren't looking in the direction he is going he will run into things and fall over them....we all would.
So, if we are following Jesus, we are on the Jesus path, but then we get distracted and start looking in another direction while our feet are still headed the way Jesus told us to go, we're going to stumble and fall.
Also, read the verse again. It says our eyes are the lamp of our whole body. Eyes are powerful. When someone's eyes are lit up with Jesus everyone can see it! It is true that the "eyes are the windows of the soul."
(This saying is attributed to many, but it seems it goes all the way back to Cicero, the famous Roman orator.)
Last night I somehow got lye in my left eye. I had been making soap earlier in the day. I have never had problems with lye before - - I've been making soap for six years. The lye I picked up I believe was a on a towel and I somehow toughed a lye crystal and put it in my eye. It burned. It hurt a lot. I woke up my husband with my scream and my teenagers rushed to the kitchen to help me. This morning it is better, but it still hurts and looks horrible. I have my vision though and there will be no lasting damage I don't think.
Dealing with the consequences of my misstep is focusing me on the importance of eyes -- how what happens to them affects every part of us. What we see, what we look at, what we head toward, all of it orders our whole cell structure.
Since my eye is hurting my whole body is weary and exhausted. What Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12 is so true for us personally and the church (the church is the reason he wrote it).
"And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it."
1 Corinthians 12:26
I wonder, do I hurt when my brothers and sisters hurt in the Body? Sometimes, but maybe not always.....if the answer is not always, than are we lacking something?
