Like a child.
Become like a child.
"He caused the storm to be still, so that the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad because they were quiet; So He guided them to their desired haven."
Where do you think that passage is from?
It sounds like the gospels to me. It sounds like Jesus and His disciples because that is what He did for them a few times.
But it isn't -- that passage is from Psalm 107.
My junior year in college I lived with two other girls in an apartment (it was actually part of an old farmhouse that had been renovated for apartments). Neither girl went to church. One said she refused to believe. The other believed in Jesus but didn't want to think about Father God because He scared her.
Lots of people have misconceptions about Father God. Some see Him as a Santa Claus figure -- jolly and generous. Others see Father God as a harsh judge. Others see Him as a taskmaster. Much of this has to do with how we experienced childhood and father figures in our lives, but there needs to come a point in our lives where we want to see Father God as He really is. Jesus said if we have seen Him we have seen the Father.
Saint John writes in His first chapter, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth."
How could Compassionate, Perfect, Strong, Loving, Incredible Jesus be the Begotten Son of a God who is harsh and cruel? Harshness and Cruelness doesn't beget Compassion and Perfection and Strength. Now, just so you don't take it wrong, Jesus has existed before Time began. He has always been with the Father (and the Spirit), but His human existence had a beginning way back a couple thousand years ago in Bethlehem.
Study Jesus if you want to know what Father God is like. And coming to God as a child means we see God has Father. We come humbly. We come to Him knowing He loves us. We come to Him knowing He wants the best for us. We come to Him with trust, with confidence, with joy. We realize His way is the best way. We seek Him so we can be part of His grand story of life.
Coming to God as a child will free us from the weeds that want to tangle us up in this world. Those weeds (worry, deceit, desire for riches) will grab hold of us hard and cause us to stumble. But if we come to the Father as a child we will know all good things come from Him. We have no need to fret.
If you are unsure of how to be childlike, watch children play. Watch children who trust their children completely. Watch a child who has fallen down. That child goes to her mother. Her mother kisses her skinned knee and the girl is fine. She goes back to play. That is how we need to be. Like a child.
