What if you've been chasing a desire that just isn't who you were created to be?
Like what?
What if you have been seduced by images in the media and have decided you've wanted to be rail-thin? So you have had this plan and have worked and worked and worked but you can't lose those last ten pounds no matter what you do. Maybe you should look at who you really are, the way God made you beautiful and embrace that.
Another example -- and this one is from my life -- what if you wanted to be a certain kind of ________ and tried and tried and no matter what you did, it just hasn't flowed in your life? Maybe you are looking at yourself wrong. Sometimes our eyes can be fixed on something so hard that we miss the truth right in front of us.
I've, for so many years, wanted to be a children's book writer. I love children's books and chapter books and much of the Young Adult fiction. I often prefer these to adult books. Some of my favorite authors are: Roald Dahl, Dick King-Smith, Joan Aiken, Gail Carson Levine and Lois Lowry (there are others, but presently these are the ones I can think of). And I wanted to be like them. I can't 'forget Quentin Blake who is known most for his illustrations (he is one of my favorite illustrators too).
I've read books upon books about writing for children. I've written children's books and they are not bad. In fact I think they are good. But the stuff doesn't flow. Other kinds of writing have always been more flowy for me but I didn't care. I still want to be a children's book writer.
Am I hitting my head against a writing wall?
I've realized even though I love children's books that doesn't make me a children's book writer, doesn't even mean God is calling me to write for children.
So now I'm going to try and stay true to who I am.
We need to embrace who God made us to be and not try and be something else. For the world needs us as we were made to be. Only you can be you and we really need you. Only I can be me and I guess the world needs me too, so we better get at being us and no one else.
