Have you ever done the Bible study Experiencing God by Henry T. Blackaby? It's been around for several years. I finally picked it up recently and it is incredible. It doesn't matter where you are in your relationship with Christ. It will bless you. The truths in it are basic so it is a really good study for those just beginning their walk, but it is also very good for those who have been Believers for decades.
I want to share some of Blackaby's words on this subject, about working with God. He talks about asking God what His will is for your life is the wrong question. Blackaby says we should use Jesus's example from the above verse. Watch to see what the Father is already doing and join in. It is about Him not us. When we ask what is God's will for MY life, than the focus in on me.
I am going to quote from the study now. This is found on page 65 of the 29th printing edition from 2005:
You may be asking, "How does God invite me to be involved with Him?" Let's review Jesus' example from John 5:17, 19-20.
1. The Father has been working right up until now.
2. Now God has Me working.
3. I do nothing on My own initiative.
4. I watch to see what the Father is doing.
5. I do what I see the Father is already doing.
6. You see, the Father loves Me.
7. He shows Me everything that He, Himself, is doing.
To experience God personally, remember God has been at work in our world from the very beginning, and He still is at work. Jesus indicated this in His life. He announced that He had come, not to do His own will, but the will of the Father who had sent Him. To know the Father's will, Jesus said He watched to see what the Father was doing. Then Jesus joined Him in that work . . . To know the Father's will, Jesus said He watched to see what the Father was doing. Then Jesus joined Him in that work. . . As God's obedient child, you are in a love relationship with Him. Because He loves you and wants to involve you in His work, He will show you where He is working so you can join Him.
Isn't that great!!
It's not about us. It's about Him. It's about His work. It's about His purposes.
Watch. Wait. Join.
