If God got caught up in all the drama everywhere, if He got caught up in our emotions, just think what a mess this world would be! Some of us humans get caught up in other people's emotions a lot. It can happen to us parents with our kids. It can happen with kids with their parents or their friends. It can happen when we forget where we end and another person begins emotionally (this really does happen). This is why we need to set boundaries because when we try to "fix" other people's emotions we are trying to do something that we weren't designed to do.
Emotions are personal. I choose what my emotions do to me. I choose to feel a certain way. Sure, sometimes we are in reactionary mode and a feeling can overwhelm us, but that doesn't mean we have to allow that emotion to rule us for any longer than it takes for the recognition to happen.
There's a cool quote by Bruce Lee going around Facebook. Lee supposedly said, "You will continue to suffer if you have an emotional reaction to everything that is said to you. True power is sitting back and observing everything with logic. If words control you that means everyone else can control you. Breathe and allow things to pass."
Sure, we like to make other people happy. And there is nothing wrong with trying. The problem comes when we take responsibility for other people's emotions and reactions. We can give them opportunity. That's it. We can give blesings and love and relationship. What they do with what we give is up to them.
We can't control other people's worlds. We can't control our own world.
Is your identity or self-worth based on how those you love feel about you? If so, you are in a bad place. You have self-worth because God chose you. He sent His Son to conquer death and sin for you. You are His creation. This is what gives you worth. I am one who loves when people are pleased with me and love me, but I can't live for that. You can't either if you want to stay sane.
"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." Genesis 1:27
