I totally get that you don't want to go to church if your only experience with church was boring, stuffy and impersonal. Why waste your time with that kind of atmosphere!
But that isn't what God wants for you or for the church. Truly.
The church is Jesus' bride: Beautiful, exciting, very personal, lovely, dramatic, full of life and joy (and also at times very messy and chaotic and emotional).
And the Church (at large) is a family -- the family of God.
And like earthly families you will deal with relationship issues, disagreements, maybe even some fighting now and then; fun times, joyful and sad moments, support for when life is rough and hard.
That's what each of us is supposed to experience in our church home.
If you have attended church and didn't feel like you could be yourself, very possibly you need a different church home.
Find a church where you love to attend church. Find a church where you can't wait to see your fellow church members every Sunday. Find a church home where you really really want to fellowship and spend time with the other church members. Church isn't supposed to be a burden or a depressing obligation. It is supposed to be a place where you share yourself and others share themselves and you all are supported and feel loved and feel challenged to be all God has called you to be.
Maybe you aren't experiencing this in your church. Maybe you need to engage yourself more (leaving isn't always the answer). It takes work to have relationships. It takes work to work as a team. It also takes commitment -- commitment that says you will stay when things get a bit uncomfortable between family members.
Not going to church isn't the answer because God tells us to assemble regularly for worship with other believers. Isn't God worth our time? Don't you think God might know what He is talking about? It is a great place to raise your kids. It is a great place to grow. It is a great place to reach for a more honest and deeper and more joyful life that isn't based on things found in this world.
Go to church. Please. You need a church body. And there is a church body who needs you. You were made to be part of the body. That is where joy will be found. No one will judge you. They will just be glad you showed up. The ones at church aren't any better than the ones who don't attend church. They just want to share Jesus with you. Please.
