"Thus has the LORD of hosts said, 'Dispense true justice, and practice kindness and compassion each to his brother; and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another." Zechariah 7:9-10
I don' mean to be harping on this issue but it's where my scripture reading led me. God has a heart for the poor and we would be well to listen. And He hates when people, when nations are "at ease."
What does this mean?
I think it means when nations or people have an abundance and couldn't care less about the suffering around them, about their fellow humans. Another verse in that same book says this:
"For because of your trust in your own achievements and treasures, Even you yourself will be captured." Jeremiah 48:7a
Nothing we have is ours. Even our own talents are gifts from God. And if we have developed these talents, developed skills, these are still God's. Everything we own we don't really own. God is the Owner. We are the stewards. Are we using good stewardship with what He is putting into our lives? Our we good stewards over the people, the children, the neighborhoods, our churches, our material possessions, our homes? How does God want us to use all these things? Everything we do should honor God. Everything we do should give Him praise.
