Sometimes we need reminding

3/29/2018

Sometimes we need reminding why we're really here. Sometimes we need a new vision of Jesus. Sometimes our feet get stuck in the mud of this world and we need to be pulled out by the hands of God.

David writes in Psalm 69:14, "Deliver me from the mire (mud), and do not let me sink; May I be delivered from my foes, and from the deep waters,"

Oh, that we would see Jesus today. That we would see His shining face! That we would remember our purpose here on this earth -- to share His love, to share His light, to reconcile people to their Maker, our loving Father.

"we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God." 2 Corinthians 5:20b

I took up painting again. It is beginning to bring me joy. I can lose myself when my brush loaded with paint touches the canvas. I have no visions of grandeur of my abilities. They are what they are. I think of it as painting feelings. I want my paintings to cause others to feel something. When we can touch the emotional heart of a person, that person will be open to change. That's why Jesus told stories. He wanted people to get into the story, to feel the right and wrong of it; to empathize and think and question. Some of His parables don't have conclusions, but they make you think.

Maybe that is what our lives are to do for others. Our lives are parables in Jesus's hands. They might not be explainable but God's light is there and that light, when it shines on dark hearts, illuminates truth, illuminates hidden hurts and needs.

We can't force others to come to Jesus but we can offer Him. We can give them invitations to church so they can hear the word of God. We can tell others what Jesus is doing in our lives. We can be His light in this world of darkness.

That doesn't mean we are always happy. It doesn't mean we always have it together. But it does mean we have hope. We have hope that God will work things out for our good. We have hope that He can take the most horrendous things this world throws at us and somehow use them for His purposes; bring redemption out of pain.

His ways aren't instantaneous but they're lasting.

"faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1

Know that if Jesus lives within you, you are a light wherever you go. He is using you even if it doesn't feel like He is. He is drawing people to Himself with your life. Believe.

Just maybe you're God's secret weapon

You see other people's lives who seem to have it all together. They haven't had as hard of time as you have. They haven't had the challenges you've had. They are walking a different walk than you are. God has them in a different place. Don't focus on other people's lives and what they are doing and how God is blessing them. God has got you where you are for a reason. Maybe you're His secret weapon! Maybe someone needs hope and you're going to be that hope just because you are there.

God's got to put us all in different places in the world and in different socio-economic classes because there are people who need Jesus everywhere. Oh Friend, don't put down your life. Don't belittle that precious gift that you are. You shine. You are a light for Jesus where you are at. God knows where you're at. He put you there. And if He put you there He will see you through. He needs you there. You are vital to His mission. You are vital to other people's salvation. Oh, hold on. Spring is coming. God is your hope. God is your rock. He hasn't deserted you. He knows how you feel. He knows it's hard right now. He knows how hard it is. And He says, Hold on. Hold on My Child. I'm there. Don't give up. Just lean on Me. I will get you through.

"just as it is written, 'Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.'" 1 Corinthians 2:9

You are who you are for a reason. He's shining through  you at this very moment. He's with you. He's preparing wonderful things for you.

"God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong." 1 Corinthians 1:27

Your life might not measure up to this world's standards of success, but you are chosen. You are gifted. You are "His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that (you) should walk in them" Ephesians 2:10

God says, Oh Child of Mine. You are so precious to Me. You are so so so precious to Me. I'm coming. Don't give up. I'm coming.

This is it -- be like a lamp

So this is it. The secret to living for Jesus successfully -- be like a lamp.

What do lamps do?

They allow themselves to be plugged in. Then they just sit somewhere in a room letting that power flow through them to the light bulb and light up the room. Often they aren't noticed by the people who walk through the room. Only when someone looks for them or looks at them are they noticed. Yet, even those who don't notice it benefit from its light.

We each are a lamp. Jesus is the power. I know you know this but really think about it.

If a lamp could move on its own and decided to start dancing or acting like a spoon, anyone who needed that lamp's light would be irritated or burned.

As I took a walk after sundown last night with my dog Zeko I had this thought that when we get to heaven we are going to look around and think, "So this is what heaven is like."

We are living like we will in heaven when we just live in the moment, enjoying the experience, noticing all the blessings, noticing God's presence. When we do this, when we live fully in the moment, we are letting that light shine through. We are being like the flowers in the field that Jesus talks about in Matthew 6.

More and more I realize that living for Jesus has really not much to do with what I do for Him,but me just being me. And you living for Jesus can be found when you are fully you, grateful to God for your life, grateful for this moment, letting Him use you however He chooses to use you. You probably won't even know most of the time He is using you.

I see Jesus use my almost 16 year old son who cannot talk or walk or do most anything on his own. He just needs to be there and God somehow shines through him. He does the same with us able-bodied people. We just need to be available.

People, it's about loving God and people.

Run to the Light!

You know that problem you have?

That problem that you are sure if others knew about it they'd reject you?

Or that sin?

Or that struggle?

Inside you hide.

You hide from God.

You hide from yourself.

You hide from the world that part that you are so ashamed of.

You feel helpless.

And everything inside you says to keep hiding.

Don't!

Run to the Light!

Run, run, run and let God's Light shine on it.

When that happens He can help you with it. His light will show you that the monster isn't a monster. It's just some dude in a stupid costume!

Don't be afraid of that monster anymore.

God is bigger than every single monster, even ones we created ourselves!

Let's say you knew of a patch of quick sand on your land. You have told and told your kids to stay away from it.

But they are kids. They are curious. They want to see how fast sticks sink. They want to see the quick sand in action.

And let's say they just get too close and fall in (even though you told them to stay away).

Would you stand on the side and yell as they go under, "I told you to stay away from this quick sand. I told you it would catch you. I told you. I told you. I told you. Now, suffer the consequences."

Of course not!

You'd get a big branch and tell your child to reach for it and then you'd pull her out. You wouldn't even stop to consider to yourself, "I told her not to do this."

No -- you would save her life because you love her so much.

God would do the same and more!

"Therefore there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Romans 8:1

Turn and Run to the Light! Right now!

Some days may seem a bit dull

Our pastor spoke about us being lighthouses yesterday. He mentioned Jesus' words in Matthew 5, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden."

He mentioned how we are the lighthouses and Jesus is the light that shines out of us.

It goes back to that old song "This little light of mine. I'm going to let it shine."

We let Christ shine through us and refuse to allow ourselves to get in the way.

But do you know what I was thinking while listening to the sermon?

I was thinking of all the dull days a lighthouse keeper must have. He or she must go for days without hearing about a ship or boat the lighthouse guided safely to shore. He or she probably don't hear much from the people the lighthouse's light helped. Very possibly it might be years between stories.

(And now according to one site there are no longer manned lighthouses. Automatic timers, maintenance from the Coast Guard
made it unnecessary to pay a lighthouse keeper's wages)

And I thought of me as a lighthouse - -how I must shine no matter what, day and night. I have no idea who is seeing the light that's coming out of me. Most of the people see it will never talk to me, will never communicate with me about how that light helped.

And that is okay. It isn't "My light" anyway. It is the light of God.

Shine well this Holy Christmas Season. It is a wonderful time of the year.

(And please don't be a Scrooge. Jesus isn't.)

Do What You Love

4/17/2013

Life is too short, too tragic, too unpredictable to live it doing something you dread or hate.

Do what you love.

God made you to love life -- not hate it or dread it or fear it.

God made you to live it and love it and be dynamically and incredibly alive!
Picture
See the little animals on the left? These are Littlest Pet Shop animals. My almost 12 year old Maggie loved playing with them.

Other girls her age are often into clothes and nail polish and crushes and silly girl romances.

But not Maggie.

She loved sitting at the table for hours and playing with these little creatures. She didn't care that no one played with her or even liked what she liked. She'd make up long running scenarios with them (to tell you the truth I think she preferred playing alone because then it went the way she wanted it too).

And if there was a salt shaker or hot sauce bottle around -- anything she could hold easily in her hand or move around the table -- would become a character in her table drama.

Picture
You know what she wanted for her birthday?

More LPS animals (as she called them).

I tell you this story because though Maggie died three weeks before her 12th birthday, she loved life. She enjoyed herself. She did what made her happy.

And in the process she delighted her parents and others. I loved watching her play and create her little stories. It was so much fun.

Don't you think God loves watching His kids enjoying life? Having fun? Feeling alive?

"Love never fails . . . But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love."
                                                                                                                                    1 Corinthians 13:8a, 13

Those verses are talking about how we treat other people, how we live our lives. But I also think it could be applied to our choices in life, what drives us, why we choose to do what we do.

Wait for it . . . and a small service announcement

"Yet God is my King from of old, Who works deeds of deliverance in the midst of the earth." Psalm 74:12

Oh boy, I have at least two more scriptures I want to share with the one above. We really sell ourselves short when we don't wait on God for solutions, for working things out, for answers to problems. How do you know if you aren't waiting? You take the problem into your hands and figure it out. You are waiting for provision but you're in panic mode. You make it work but later there are all sorts of consequences to deal with because of how you "fixed" it.

Don't do anything out of panic or fear! Nothing!

Read that verse above again. It says God works "deeds" of deliverance. God isn't into quick stuff or slapping a band-aid on the problem. He truly restores us to life and joy and peace. This kind of restoration takes time but while taking that time God is doing more than we can realize in so many more areas than just us. When we insist on our own way we are saying, "It's about me! Do it my way! I don't want to wait. I don't care what else God could be planning. I just want my problem taken away."

We miss out. The world misses out. Everyone loses when we don't wait on God.

Okay, now I have a couple more scriptures for you that are just so cool. Here we go:

"Light is sown like seed for the righteous, And gladness for the upright in heart." Psalm 97:11

"Light arises in the darkness for the upright." Psalm 112:4a

Yes, wait for the light. It will come. God will come through. But you have to wait. If you wait you will gain new strength. If you wait you will see some incredible miracle that will increase your faith and speak to so many who are watching your life.

I almost forgot, my service announcement. Starting Wednesday, my blog post won't be posted until later in the morning. Right now I usually post it before 7:30 central time. But Wednesday my mornings get a whole lot busier. My six kids will need to get ready for school. And that means my mom duties have to come first. So please, don't quit coming if you've been chiming in early in the morning. Just stop by a bit later. Also, share this with your friends. We all need Jesus. We all need encouragement. We all need strength to face the challenges. Right now we are getting about 2000 people a day spending a few minutes here. Let's try and get 10,000 by the end of the year. That would be cool.
