Where would we skate? I ask.
In the house, she answers.
I laugh.
This new generation has a lot of cool things but one thing they don't have is skating parties. I loved them as a kid. I went to every single one. I'd don a pair of rental skates and skate away. And the best part was when the Skate Ranch D.J. played Y.M.C.A. by The Village People. We'd all do the motions while we skated around the skating rink.
I have no idea why it was so fun. But it was. Great exercise too! And at Skate Ranch they had a disco floor in the middle of the rink. When my friends and I felt like dancing we'd take off our skates and run to the disco and dance, dance, dance. I had my colored jeans with the matching comb sticking out of my back pocket. My hair was probably up in a couple of barrettes looking a little like Pam Dawber's hairstyle on Mork and Mindy (I miss that show. Since Robin Williams' passing, one TV channel had a Mork and Mindy marathon. My kids learned to love the show too).
I'm thankful for memories that make me smile. Memories are a gift from God. Some of them may not be good but I'll take the bad ones because they come with a whole lot more good ones.
Think back to your junior high days. I bet you can think of something to laugh about.
