The Innkeeper has gotten such a bad rap in hundreds of sermons over the centuries. To prove the point that people have no room in their heart for Jesus, many have blamed this innkeeper as the first one of millions who say no to God.
Let's give him a break and move on. Very legitimately there was no room. Thousands of people were in Bethlehem for the census. This was a tiny tiny town. And really, would you want to have a baby with a bunch of strangers looking on?
No, it was God's compassion for Jesus to be born among the animals. Animals at night in a barn/stable/cave (whatever it was) are quiet. It is dark. They are chewing their cud. They are going to sleep. It is one of the most peaceful warm places one can find on this earth.
And animals know when they are in the presence of something fragile. I've witnessed this myself. My animals know my son Hawk is helpless and when they are around him they treat him gently. How much more did this happen with the newborn Savior? I wish I could have been there that night....
In our lives when something doesn't go as planned, do we blame someone? Or do we realize God is in control and think maybe this is what He planned all along...
